Is there something wrong with trying to better yourself? Honestly???

I've never been too happy with the way I looked. When I was younger, I lost two teeth and they never grew back; i've worn braces and a retainer with plastic teeth on them, until now. I'm in the process of getting teeth implants, and I've also decided to start working out. In sum, i'm trying to better myself, well, physically at least. My friend says i'm being too shallow, and that I should love myself for who I am, not try to change myself. She says i'm too physically self-absorbed. Is there anything wrong with trying to better yourself when you can???

Is there something wrong with trying to better yourself? Honestly???
This all depends on a lot of things. First of all, I believe it is fine for people to want to better themselves, but the things you have been doing to improve your physical appearance indicates that you have a very low self esteem. If you're not careful, you could end up getting plastic surgery after plastic surgery, and you still won't be happy with yourself. You will never be satisfied with yourself until you learn to accept yourself for who you are, flaws and all. I know that is a cliche, but it is true. Instead of focusing on your outward appearance, look inside yourself. What makes you feel like you must improve yourself? Maybe you could try to improve your inward self. Find something that you like to do and just enjoy yourself. Your friend seems like he accepts you for who you are-and doesn't like that you are trying to be someone you're not. Just be yourself. People will like you for keeping it real, rather than trying to front.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with trying to make yourself look better to boost the way you feel about yourself. Missing teeth can really take a toll on self worth! If your friend is telling you these things maybe she doesn't understand how these things make you feel. If she does understand and you over think all of it this could be the reason she is telling you this. Also she may be trying to tell you that your fine with her however you look. Just let her know your doing it for you and wanting teeth isn't asking for too much.
Reply:Not at all.. if you are doing this for someone, or someTHING, then it may all be in vain. But if you are doing this for yourself, in order to feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin, you are on the right track. Its the same reason people eat healthy and take care of themselves... To be confident of their health, and comfortable in their appearance.

People get hair cuts, go shopping and practice personal hygiene for the same reasons, so you are not out of line, and you are totally normal for trying to better yourself.

go you.
