Extreme phobia of dentists - gotta go see one in an hour!?

I fainted yesterday morning at ten to 6, and landed smack on my face, and have nearly knocked out two of my front teeth.

I have to go to the hospital to have a destist check them over, but chances are i'm going to need to have the teeth pulled and implants put in. I'm TERRIFIED. I HATE dentists so much - I get violent, and last time I went, despite being about 16, I laid on the floor and screamed and cried until I had to be escorted out of the building.

I know that it's an irrational phobia, but I can't get over it. I'm absolutely dreading this - I don't know what i'm going to do.

Does anyone have any advice or guidance on how I can do this?

Extreme phobia of dentists - gotta go see one in an hour!?
I am sorry you had this happen. But,you need to know something. Dentistry has advanced so much since you were 16,you are probably gonna say to yourself, what was I so afraid of? I hate to even tell you this, but the numbing medicine they put on your gums or wherever the problem is,the med is so good it numbs so you won't feel it. It is your mind,I know, because my mind flips me out.I have learned to breath a nice long breath, open my mouth, close my eyes, and relaxing all muscle is a must.If you tighten your muscles,it also will tighten up your face muscle. That mean he has tight mouth muscles to go through for the numbing. He will tell you everything he does. But,for your own peace of mind.Relax, breath during it all,and it will be done before you know it. I don't know if he has smelling gas ,but if so,you will have no choice but to relax!!! :) You know your being irrational, then leave your irrational at the door.
Reply:advise the dentist of this and they will put you to sleep, good luck!
Reply:try knocking back a bottle of vodka before you go
Reply:ask someone to know u out for a few hours with injection and that might help. :-)
Reply:Sweetheart, just remember that the dentist is there to help you. It is not him who is causing you pain; it's just the way teeth are, they hurt when they are worked on. The dental assistants are caring, compassionate people who will calm you and ease your mind.
Reply:When I see dentist I encourage myself by prayer that I will suffer with Christ. Tooth extract is the least painful surgery. Why afraid? Today needle are tiny that ant bite is even painful. The dentist said to me. "Did you try sex? That is even painful," he said.
Reply:my mums a dental nurse and im terrified of the dentist, i got kicked in the mouth at high school and 2 of my teeth snapped in half, they had to be capped and i was dreading it but its never as bad as you think it will be, i am going for a filling next week and im crapping myself, get urself drunk then you wont care
Reply:there are SPECIAL dentists fro when you really have it bad, but I don;t think there is time for that. Do what that first girl said. Tell him. (or her) They will put you under.

Good luck.
Reply:If someone took 3 days to answer this one it would be far too late for you. How can I soothe your fears? Perhaps you could try to think of something very pleasant, every time your mind wanders towards your fear. think of the very best memory you have, or of something nice someone once said, and concentrate hard on it until your mind is calm again. You are the only one who can control your own mind.
Reply:now i might sound like a goody goody it really ent that bad try relaxing before you go tell the dentists your fears and if he or she is a good one they will put you at ease good luck!
Reply:Woah Why did you faint thats not healthy but other then that i hate dentist im 20 just 3 weeks ago had wisdom teeth pulled out all four went in the chair and started shaking so bad the dentist told me to stop if i don't he will do it another time (yelled) then i got them out still shake though and you know what im here today you will be find and if could get all 4 wisdom teeth out you and get your teeth fix too so remember i know it sucks but just try and relax
Reply:think of the dentist as a giant greasy clown
Reply:By all means, keep your fear at a low enough level to inform the dentist you are seeing that you have an extreme phobia. They can give you sedation, either via pills or an iv that will help it all. Trust me- I was smacked in the mouth by an irrational drunk and lost my front two teeth as a result. At first, the dentist tried to salvage them by wiring them in- and I imagine that will be the first thing they consider with you as well. If that doesn't work, you can be sedated for the removal. That actually isn't bad, believe it or not. I have no memory of my procedure after the first round of sedatives hit. I felt no pain, and I awoke in another room with my dear husband near by for support. Although I won't kid you that my mouth was sore for several days, it was not nearly so bad as I expected. I have a bridge now to replace them, and it fits quite well. Unless you look closely, you do not see the support clips at all- mine are on the sides under the curve of the lip. Just be up front with the dentist from the start. It's not as bad as your mind makes it, honestly. And there is plenty they can do to help make it much less traumatic to you. If needbe, get a friend to go with you and explain. You can do it, if I can, you can.
Reply:yes inform the dentist and he will judge if you should be sedated or anaesthetised Good Luck you'll feel brave when its all over
Reply:let your dentist reception know before you go, so the dentist is alerted to your fears, they are trained to handle people like you, and will prob be able to prescribe some sedative, or offer advise
Reply:You are better off getting the work done on your teeth now than putting it off.As the teeth could become decayed then there will be alot more visits to the dentists in the long run.I know it is hard when you have a fear of dentists.Try and stay calm.I have been going for treatment myself for the last month.Believe me it is all virtually pain free .Dentistry has come a long way in the past several years.YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT%26gt;I will be thinking of ya.Good luck
Reply:From the description of your fear, then I'd say you are not alone. However, your fear is quite unfounded. The dentistry you believe you will need will probably be done under an anasthetic [puts you to sleep] and the work carried out by a dental surgeon.

Note the word 'surgeon'. You need one if your want to be put under [asleep] your ordinary dentist is not licensed [in UK] to perform such.

So, find yourself a good dental surgeon and he/she will be able to do the work while you are asleep. No problem.
