Dental Anesthesia - What Happened to me?

I had an abscess tooth pulled today and when my anesthesia was injected I felt fine at first but all of a sudden I felt dizzy and I started turning pale, broke out in a cold sweat, and for a while my heart rate was up. Finally things started settling and the heart rate went back down, I felt cold and was a little shaky for a bit. They did the procedure on me and I checked out with the receptionist and drove home. After I got home, once again I broke out in a much more milder sweat, then felt fine, and once again with barely any sweating. For most of the afternoon I felt a little out of it. Currently, I feel great....but I do want to get a tooth implant in the future and dont want something like anesthesia keeping me from doing it. I really had no explanation to me why that happened, I was told it sometimes causes a reaction and is normal. It was just and still is really odd to me thinking that an injection did that, not the gas. Thanks for any info here!!

You just had a vaso-vagal response. This is something that a dentist is familiar with and usually has nothing to do with the anesthetic but your anxiousness about what was going to happen. You didn't say if this was an upper or lower tooth but if it was a lower one it is possible that some of the anesthetic was injected directly into the blood stream and this will cause a slight reaction also. While scary to the individual, it's transient as you have seen. I know that the next time you're at the dentist this episode will be fore front in your thoughts but try to relax and you'll be fine.

Reply:They really knocked you out, is what happened. They also finished the procedure a lot sooner than time alotted, they probably gave you more anesthesia five minutes before the procedure was done and should have administered that dose twenty minutes before.
Reply:Does sound like a temporary reaction since you said you feel fine now. It all depends on the strength of the med %26amp; what kind they gave you, since everyone reacts differently to different anesthetics. I wouldn't worry about it unless you have to go back for another appointment, in which case you would be well off to tell the dentist about this case, or if you start feeling the same effects tonight or tomorrow.
Reply:Whoa!! Your body kicked back Novocaine??? You must have a low tolerance...When you see your dentist, ask him about pre-med of amoxicillin to help your immune system go through this...also, NO drinking alcohol 24 hours before you go in, and be sure you drink a little more water..It sounds like to me that you were dehydrated and the novocaine settled into your heart...Which is another good reason to drink your 8-10 glasses of water a day...PLease suggest the pre-med of amoxicillin next time, and if he objects...find another dentist..Or, go into a doctor and explain to him what happenened and ask if pre-med is a good idea, and if so, have him write a note so you can show the dentist. Reply:sounds like the meds they gave u at the visit was a little too Strong for your body or u could have a allergy to them
Reply:explain to you dentist that you had these very real symptoms and ask him to use something else. there has to be other options. i had a bad reaction to the adhesive used for a cap one time and got a whole mouth full of cold sores. now, it's in my chart not to use the popular product. good luck to you.
